Optum Rx App Update: Prior Authorization and Spending Tools Roll Out

Optum Rx App Update: Prior Authorization and Spending Tools Roll Out

The Optum Rx app received a version update on July 15, 2026, and the release notes point to two significant additions for eligible members.

First, the app appears to be bringing prior authorization management directly into the mobile experience. Based on the update text, members can now submit requests, check status updates, and see clear next steps without leaving the app. This is a meaningful shift. Historically, prior authorization has been a friction point — you’d find out at the pharmacy counter that a drug needs approval, then spend days playing phone tag between your doctor’s office and the insurer. Having this flow inside the app won’t eliminate the clinical review process, but it should cut down on the uncertainty. You’ll know where things stand.

The second change is a spending summary view. Eligible members can now track progress toward their deductible and out-of-pocket maximum from the More menu. This is the kind of feature that sounds simple but is genuinely useful. Most people don’t realize how close they are to hitting their deductible until they get a surprise bill. Having that number visible, updated in near-real time, changes how you think about filling a prescription late in the year.

I should note that Optum has been investing in prior authorization automation for a while. A 2024 press release from UnitedHealth Group described a program called PreCheck Prior Authorization, which automates approvals for over 25 drugs including GLP-1s, ADHD medications, and asthma treatments. That program is scaling through a partnership with Surescripts. The app update may tie into that broader infrastructure, but the release notes don’t confirm integration directly.

The spending summary feature aligns with Optum’s broader push toward transparency. The company launched a transparent pharmacy care model last year with pricing comparison tools. The deductible tracker feels like a natural extension of that philosophy.

Both features are described as available to “eligible members,” which likely means they depend on your specific plan configuration. Not everyone will see them immediately.

I’d keep an eye on whether the prior authorization tool actually reduces the time between prescription and pickup. That’s the real test. The spending tracker is a nice quality-of-life addition, but the PA workflow has the potential to save real headaches.
