NotebookLM Is Now Gemini Notebook

Google has renamed its AI-powered research tool from NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook across the Android app. The change is reflected in the app's update field and confirmed by multiple public sources, including The Verge, 9to5Google, and Google's official blog.

Name Change Details

The rebranding replaces the "Language Model" suffix with a direct connection to the Gemini brand. According to 9to5Google, Gemini Notebook remains a "standalone product focused on being your premier research tool," but will now "do more across the Google ecosystem." The app's logo has been updated with a blue-purple Gemini gradient, replacing the previous NotebookLM icon.

New Features

Alongside the name change, Google has introduced several feature updates. Yahoo Tech reports that each notebook now includes a secure cloud computer, enabling native code execution for deeper data analysis of sources. The update also added new output formats, including .json and Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) files. These features became available starting Thursday, according to that report.

Background

Google first revealed the tool as Project Tailwind at Google I/O in May 2023. It launched later that year as NotebookLM, an experimental AI-first notebook grounded in user-provided documents. Over time, Google added features such as AI-generated podcast summaries, narrated slideshows, and TikTok-style clips. The app recently gained the ability to connect notebooks to the Gemini app.

The name "Gemini Notebook" aligns the tool with Google's broader AI product line, moving away from the more technical "NotebookLM" label. The app remains a standalone research tool focused on working with user-provided sources rather than pulling information from the open web.
